When Are Skylights Perfect for a Home?

Skylights are fantastic additions to your roofing system. As long as you have them installed by a professional, preferably one from your local roofing company, you’ll get to enjoy all the benefits of skylights:

  • Better daylighting
  • Added natural warmth during cold days
  • A great view of the sky and the outdoors
  • Added value to your home

However, before you get all excited and start planning a skylight installation, you should know where and when skylights are recommended. Not all situations are good for a skylight installation, and it’s best to determine whether yours won’t lead to problems.

Skylights are perfect if:

Your Area Is Not Prone to Heavy Snow Most of the Year

If your roof is always under several feet of snow almost all year, there isn’t much point in installing a skylight, as the snow will block the view and won’t let the sunshine through, either. One more thing to consider is the weight of the snow and the constant presence of moisture, which can penetrate the edges of your skylight or perhaps even cause the glass to break over time.

While most top-quality skylights are built to withstand heat and cold, if your area is prone to frequent freeze-thaw cycles, that’s bad news for your skylight.

Install skylights if your climate is mostly temperate and does not include heavy snowfall for many months. Make sure to hire a professional roofer to do the job. Going the DIY route on such an important project can lead to issues.

Your Area Is Not Too Hot

One of the benefits of skylights is that they introduce sunlight into your home even during the winter season. This means your home will benefit from the natural heating provided by the sun coming in through your skylight. You can save money on heating this way.

However, if your home receives too much sunlight, a skylight might make your rooms too hot, especially during the summer months.

Your Area Isn’t Prone to Heavy Rainstorms and Hurricanes

As long as your area receives a normal amount of rain, your skylight will be fine. However, if your area is prone to extreme weather events, such as heavy rainstorms and hurricanes, skylights might not be such a good idea. Long, heavy rainstorms can punish your skylight and cause it to leak. Strong hurricanes can cause your skylight to break, particularly if it throws debris onto it.

Skylights are a great addition to your home, but it’s best to find out whether your home is located in an area where skylights provide the most benefit.
