4 Questions To Ask a Siding Contractor Before Hiring Them

Home improvement projects are essentially a collaboration between you and your siding and roofing contractor. That’s why choosing a contractor that can meet your needs and communicating with them constantly are vital to your project’s success.

To make sure your contractor’s qualified for the job, you need to vet them. In addition to checking their basic qualifications (like a state license and workers’ insurance), you can ask them these questions:

1. How Long Have You Been Working in the Industry?

The number of years a siding contractor has been in business should give you a good idea of their level of expertise.

Important note: You should also ask them about how varied their experience has been. What are the types of projects they’ve handled? In general, the more varied a contractor’s experience, the better.

2. Where Is Your Office Located?

It makes more practical sense to hire a contractor that’s based in your area. If your project runs into any issues, they’ll be able to fix them faster than contractors from out of town. Not to mention you’ll be able to quickly narrow down your options by focusing your search on local contractors. And since local contractors are more familiar with the local climate and building codes, they can make better recommendations.

3. Do You Have Any Certifications?

Here’s another pro-tip: Look for contractors certified by manufacturers and independent non-profits. Before being certified, contractors have to undergo stringent vetting and additional training. In a sense, these manufacturers and non-profits have already done all the vetting work for you.

4. Do You Use a Subcontractor?

The problem with using subcontractors is it’s nearly impossible to maintain oversight over the quality of their workmanship. That’s why it’s best to look for roofing contractors with full-time employees.
