The Do’s and Dont’s of Low-Slope Roof Maintenance

A flat roofs is great. It can lend your home a modern look and boost your home’s overall curb appeal. One minor drawback is that they require just a tad bit more upkeep than sloped roofs. To keep it looking and functioning at its best, here are a few maintenance tips from your trusted roof and siding contractor, Right Angle Roofing & Siding.

Do: Inspect Your Roof Regularly

Since your roof has no slope, there is a tendency for water to pool even with a good drainage system. Pooled water can rot the roofing materials underneath and add some extra weight. For this reason, it is important that you check your roof for ponding often.

Don’t: Let the Nearby Trees Get Overgrown

Roof repair companies recommend that you keep branches back about six feet to prevent them from falling on your flat roof. Large branches can puncture your roof and cause structural damage while smaller twigs and leaves can clog your drains and cause water to collect on your roof.

Do: Check Your Drainage System Often

As mentioned above, since your roof has a low or almost non-existent slope, keeping it dry will be your number one priority. During a downpour, grab your raincoat and take a look at your downspouts. If it appears that the water isn’t flowing properly, be sure to call in your roof contractor right away.

Don’t: Ignore Ice and Snow Buildup

During the winter, be sure to clear away any snow and ice build-up. Snow in the center of your roof can melt and refreeze around the perimeter, causing it to block the drains when the weather turns cold again.
